✦ Our Philosophy ✦
In an age when the internet shapes so much of how we feel about ourselves and the world, the question of what genuine digital wellness looks like — and how to build it — has never mattered more.
Digital wellness is a term that gets used a great deal but defined with surprising inconsistency. For some it means reducing screen time. For others it means using apps that help you meditate or sleep. For tech companies it has sometimes become a marketing label applied to any product with a vaguely positive framing.
At Etherical Media we use a more precise and demanding definition: digital wellness is the use of technology to genuinely improve mental, emotional or physical wellbeing — measured not by engagement metrics but by real, positive change in the lives of the people using it.
By that definition, an app that keeps you scrolling for hours by triggering anxiety and comparison is not a wellness tool, no matter how many lotus flowers appear in its branding. A tool that takes thirty seconds of your time and leaves you feeling genuinely more grounded, more clear-headed and more compassionate toward yourself — that is digital wellness.
"The measure of a digital wellness tool is not how often people use it — it is how much better they feel when they do."
The wellness technology market has grown enormously over the past decade — yet anxiety, depression and loneliness continue to rise, particularly among younger generations who are the heaviest users of digital technology. Something is clearly not working.
Part of the problem is structural. Most digital products — including many that market themselves as wellness tools — are built on a business model that requires your continued engagement. The longer you spend in the app, the more advertising revenue is generated. This creates a fundamental tension between the stated goal of improving your wellbeing and the commercial imperative of keeping you on the platform.
A genuinely effective meditation app, if it truly worked as advertised, would teach you to meditate effectively and then you would need it less — not more. A genuinely effective sleep tool would improve your sleep and then become less necessary. These outcomes are incompatible with an engagement-based business model, which is why truly effective wellness technology is so rare.
❌ Exploitative Tech
✦ Genuine Wellness Tech
We built Etherical Media with a clear-eyed understanding of this problem — and a deliberate commitment to being different. Our properties are not built on an engagement model. We do not need you to spend hours on our sites. We do not send you anxiety-inducing notifications to bring you back. We do not use dark patterns to keep you scrolling.
Instead, we build tools that are genuinely useful in a short amount of time — a mantra that takes thirty seconds and stays with you all day; a coin flip that takes two minutes and clarifies a decision you have been agonising over for weeks; a sleep ritual that you follow once and sleep better that very night. The measure of success is not how long you spent with us — it is how much better you felt when you left.
This approach is only possible because our business model does not depend on your continuous engagement. We generate revenue through contextually relevant advertising and premium content — which means we can afford to build tools that actually work, even if they make themselves less necessary over time. That alignment between our commercial interests and your genuine wellbeing is, we believe, the most important thing that distinguishes Etherical Media from most of the wellness technology landscape.
01
Genuine Benefit First
Every design decision is evaluated by one question: does this genuinely benefit the person using it?
02
Evidence Based
Claims must be supportable by credible research. We do not make wellness claims we cannot substantiate.
03
Honest Scope
We are clear about what our tools can and cannot do. We always signpost professional help when it is needed.
04
Privacy Preserving
Wellness tools often handle sensitive personal information. We treat it with the highest level of care and discretion.
05
Accessible Design
Beautiful tools that only work for some people are not wellness tools. We design for everyone.
06
No Dark Patterns
We never use manipulative design to keep people engaged, extract data or encourage behaviours against their interests.
07
Continuous Improvement
We actively seek feedback and research to improve our tools — because the science of wellbeing is always evolving.
We are at an early and critical moment in the development of digital wellness as a field. The tools being built today — and the values embedded in them — will shape how millions of people relate to technology and to their own wellbeing for decades to come. That is an extraordinary responsibility.
At Etherical Media we are committed to building part of a better future for digital wellness — one tool, one property, one honest interaction at a time. We believe that technology, built with genuine care and genuine values, can be a powerful force for human flourishing. We are working, every day, to prove it.
If you share these values and want to explore what genuine partnership in digital wellness looks like, we would love to hear from you at hello@ethericalmedia.com.
